Kayla Guilford

Compliance Analyst, Lackawanna College

Focus Area: Transparency

Scranton, Pennsylvania
Office Representing: Business

In her role as compliance analyst at Lackawanna College, Kayla Guilford monitors and assesses the interactions/linkages and communication between the business and financial aid offices, providing periodic reports and recommendations for improvement opportunities. She is responsible for reviewing and reconciling student accounts— as well as internal and external system transfers—to ensure transactions are timely, accurate, properly documented, and compliant with all internal and external rules and regulations. Development and launching of internal compliance reviews encompassing all departments across Lackawanna College also fall within her purview.

How did you first get interested in or involved in higher education issues?

"It is imperative to stay abreast of the most recent rules and regulations governing the higher education sector, especially within a position of compliance. Much to my surprise, I look forward to reading my multiple Google Alerts each morning that include keywords like 'higher education,' 'Dear Colleague Letter,' and 'Department of Education,'" Guilford said.

Why did you apply to be a part of the Higher Education Committee of 50? What drew you to this opportunity?

"Since starting my position at Lackawanna College, I have experienced first-hand the unique struggles of our students. The Lackawanna student body comprises a small community all their own; many students are nontraditional and rely heavily on financial aid to further their education. As I have seen time and again, they simply cannot afford to pay tuition beyond what is covered by financial aid," Guilford explained. "However, I have been forced to tell students—who are pulling funds from every possible avenue—that they do not have enough, that they cannot continue their education until their tuition is paid. I am not naive; I know this same financial struggle is faced by many students around the world. But in my time at Lackawanna College, I have witnessed the perseverance and uniqueness of the Lackawanna community and believe our students deserve legislation that matches their uniqueness. Lackawanna College fosters underprepared students in a unique way, helping them to succeed at much larger institutions. That is why I want to be part of this committee—a group of forward-thinking minds who will create the opportunities these hardworking, unique students need and deserve."
